Flu Jabs are given by intramuscular injection normally into the arm you don't write with. For adults and children over 13 years it is a single dose injection. For children under 13 years who have not been previously vaccinated, a second dose is given after 4-6 weeks.
Jabs should not be given if you are allergic to hens eggs or are suffering from a fever.
The influenza viruses are constantly altering their structure. Every year the World Health Organisation recommends which strains the influenza vaccines should contain. This year the vaccines contain the A/Brisbane/59/2007 (H1N1), A/Brisbane/10/2007 (H3N2) and B/Brisbane/60/2008-like strain.

If you decide to immunise your child with the single dose vaccines for measles mumps and rubella then the vaccinations are given at least 6 weeks apart, and usually in the order given above. The vaccines are all intramuscular injections, normally into the arm. Vaccinations can commence at an age of 13 months.
A second booster is given just before the child commences school
Children who are feverish should not be vaccinated.
We have stocks of rouvax and rudivax. However there are no supplies of mumpsvax as Merck have ceased production of the single vaccine. We are trying to establish another reputable supplier at the moment but chances of sourcing this vaccine in the near future are probably no more than 25%.

Human Papilloma Virus(HPV) Vaccine or Gardasil is licensed for the prevention of cervical cancer and genital warts for females. It is most effective if given before sexual activity starts. The longevity of the vaccine has not been established and as the vaccine does not protect against all strains of HPV, cervical screening should continue.
The vaccine is given by injection normally into the thigh. The vaccination procedure is a course of three injections, the second after 2 months and the third 6 months after the first.

Pneumococcal vaccination is recommended if you have an increased risk to pneumococcal infection. Indicators may be aged 65+, chronic respiratory /heart /renal /liver disease, diabetes or immune deficiencies amongst others.
The vaccination is given by intramuscular injection, and is only a single dose vaccine.
Revaccination is often not recommended except every 5 years in certian individuals.

A two dose oral vaccination given four weeks apart. Rotavirus vaccine (Rotarix) is licensed for immunsiation of infants over 6 weeks of age provided they are not suffering from diarrhoea or vomitting. Good personal hygiene after changing babies nappy is well advised. The first 1ml dose of vaccine is given by mouth and the second oral dose is administered at least 4 weeks later. Courses chould be completed by 24 weeks of age, but preferably before 16 weeks.
Rotarix protects against gastro-enteritis caused by the rotavirus infection.

Adults and children who have not had chickenpox can be vaccinated against this most unpleasant disease. Chickenpox can be an extremely serious disease in adults and in particular, pregnant women.
Children between the ages of 1 and 12 yrs only require one dose.
Patients aged 13yrs+ require two doses six weeks apart.
The injection is given into the upper arm.
Chickenpox vaccination is not available on the NHS as part of the childhood schedule; however Germany and USA include it in their routine childhood vaccinations.
If your child has just had the MMR then you must wait 4 weeks before they receive the Chickenpox jab.

Normally vaccination occurs 10 days prior to travel. Only one vaccination into the upper arm is required and the vaccination lasts for 10 years.
