In the UK babies are now vaccinated against Meningitis C at the age of 12 months; this is typically combined with Hib vaccination. We offer single Meningitis C vaccination, with a vaccine called NEISVAC-C, or a combined Hib/Meningitis C vaccination called Menitorix. Recently, the Department of Health has introduced a booster of the Meningitis C vaccine which is given from age 14. The chosen vaccine covers four strains of the disease, A,C,W & Y. These vaccines are called NIMENRIX or MENVEO. This offers protection to teenagers against strain W in addition to strain C.
Furthermore, Meningitis ACWY vaccine is also used as a travel vaccine for those going to parts of Africa and the Middle East.
Children of any age can be given Meningitis ACWY vaccine.
We’d love to talk to you about the most suitable vaccine for your child so please do discuss this with the doctor during your appointment.
